Life Sciences Library

Located in 401 Paterno Library, the Life Sciences Library (website) contains a broad range of agricultural sciences, biological sciences, and health and biomedical sciences materials.

The collection includes circulating books, reference materials, current and bound periodicals, agricultural extension station bulletins, soil surveys (for holdings and call numbers, check the CAT), electronic databases, anatomical models, The Kneebone Mushroom Collection, the George Harvey Fly-Fishing Literature Collection and other resources.

In-person reference and telephone (814-865-7056) assistance is available during library hours.

Scanners

Scanners are located in the Social Sciences, Business, Education and Behavioral Sciences, Special Collections, Maps, Gateway Commons, Reserve Reading Room, and the Music and Media Center; authentication is required.

Engineering Copy Center. Offers a wide variety of services to faculty, staff, and students, including scanning and large-format printing. Detailed information. Hours are 8am to 5pm Monday thru Friday.

Printers, Color

Color laser printers are set up like the black and white printers, but a color print counts as three black and white pages. Color laser printers are currently (09/03/08) available in the following ITS Labs:

The Maps Library has a HP color laser printer that charges $.30 per copy; print jobs must be sent from computers located in the Maps Library.

Schlow Library in downtown State College has a color printer available for public use (does not make transparencies; print charges may apply).

ATM Machines

There are no ATM machines in the library. The closest ATM machines to Pattee and Paterno Libraries are located: in the lobby of Kern Graduate Building, in Waring Commons, and on the first floor of the HUB.

Automated Checkout Stations

If you wish to skip the line at the Lending Services desk or just want to check out your own books, you may do so at the automated checkout stations located around the library. They are located on the first floor in the main lobby adjacent from the Lending Services desk and in the Social Sciences, Business, and Life Sciences libraries in the Paterno Library. These machines will allow you to check out books yourself.

When using these machines, please make sure to keep your receipt and slide both sides of the book across the scanner in order properly check out the materials.

Open House

Lockers

Self-service lockers are available in the Schreyer Business Library for students who need a place to store their books, bags, and other items. The lockers are located in the elevator lobby of the Business Library, on the 3rd floor of Paterno Library, and are intended for daily use, with patrons keying in their own four-digit combinations.

Patrons are not permitted to use the lockers for overnight storage—any items left in the lockers at the end of the day will be sent to the Libraries’ Lost and Found.

In addition to the lockers, we have study carrels that are available for longer term use.

Wheel-chair accessible fountains are located in the Life Sciences Library, 401 Paterno Library, and in the Education and Behavioral Sciences Library, 501 Paterno Library.

Stacks levels BA, 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 3, one each near the east and west interior stairwells (there are also sinks in these locations)

Rest rooms in Pattee Library and Paterno Library are accessible to persons with mobility impairments, unless otherwise noted. Rest rooms are located in these areas:

Printers

Students may print up to 110 black-and-white pages each semester without incurring extra charges.The cost of these is subsidized by the information technology fee. After 110 pages (or the equivalent in color pages), each additional page on non-color printers costs $0.05. Page counts and prices are for sheets of paper, regardless of printing on one or both sides. Printers are located in:

Students may now use their LionCash+ account to purchase additional pages for printing in ITS computer labs and classrooms and University Libraries locations at University Park as well as other locations participating in the ITS printing system. Using LionCash+ enables a quick and convenient way to purchase additional printing pages and replaces the old method of locating a signature station, agreeing to bursar billing and waiting for authorization to occur. With LionCash+ for printing, students will continue to receive 110 subsidized pages each semester. For complete details see the LionCash+ for printing site.

Printing status is updated in the printing subsystem each morning at 4:00am, and hourly during the day from 9:15am to 11:15pm.

Leisure Reading Collection

You asked for it and we listened! The Penn State Libraries at University Park now have a Leisure Reading Collection, located in the Reserve Reading Room, 1st floor, West Pattee Library (see photos).

Gateway Commons

The Samuel I. and Kate Sidewater Gateway Commons (website) is located off the Pattee Atrium, opposite the Circulation and Interlibrary Loan Desk. The Gateway Commons houses 46 computers, including those in the Donald M. and Virginia M. Cook Instruction Room, and wheel-chair accessible workstations. Gateway computers access the Libraries' online catalog, databases, as well as the Internet.

Services in the Gateway Commons, provided by Library Learning Services, include in-person, telephone, and electronic reference assistance as well as instruction to patrons in the use of these resources. .

Gateway Commons has the following special equipment available for use:

46 networked workstations (PSU access account is required) enhanced with Microsoft Office software applications with printing and downloading capabilities
a circulating jump drive for downloading from computers without floppy drives
a flatbed scanning station capable of scanning materials up to 12" x 17"
an electric typewriter
a wheel chair for in-building use

Book Repair

Patrons wishing to repair or restore a book from their personal library can contact Wert Bookbinding at 800-344-9378. A list of additional Pennsylvania book restorers is available from the Pennsylvania Center for the Book.

The University Libraries does not offer book repair services for personal books.

Library Public Computers

There are many computers for public use scattered throughout the subject libraries, branch libraries, and the stacks. These computers provide access to the home pages of the University Libraries and its various operating units, LIAS on the WEB, and the Internet, and they are enhanced with a variety of software applications as well as the Beilstein 7.0.8, ChemNetBase, SciFinder Scholar 2006 databases. Additional software applications for word processing and spreadsheeting are available in the Student Computer Labs located around campus (access account required).

Refworks

Penn State has licensed Refworks, a citation software and bibliographic management tool for students, faculty and staff. Refworks is similar to EndNote or Zotero.Complete information for getting started with Refworks can be found here.

Laptops and Ports

Laptops are available for 7-day, external loan to University students, faculty and staff from the Reserves service desk. These laptops are non-renewable, non-recallable, and subject to overdue fees of $25.00/day overdue, up to a maximum of $100.00. They are identified by green luggage tags with library barcodes affixed to the cases; when checked out, a date due slip is placed in a vinyl pocket affixed to the top of each laptop.

Also available in the Reserve Reading Room are a small number of laptops, identifiable by a red tag, reserved for in-library use only for Penn State faculty, staff, and students.

Media and Technology Support Services have laptops available for three-day rental to members of the University community. For more information about the rental program, contact MTSS Equipment Scheduling at (814) 865-5400.

Laptop Ports

Internet ports for laptops are available in the subject libraries and in the Paterno Family Humanities Reading Room.

Wireless Access

Wireless access is available in the Libraries (Penn State wireless locations) .
Users at Penn State need to install VPN (Virtual Private Network) software in order to receive wireless access.
For VPN, users need a Penn State Access Account or a Short Term Access Account for Research (STAAR).
iPhone users can now access the wireless network too. See detailed instructions for configuration here.
