Pattee Library and Paterno Library, located on Curtin Road at the corner of Allen Street, comprise University Park's main library building. Pattee Library and Paterno Library became one operating unit when Paterno Library was dedicated on September 8, 2000, after a 3-year construction project that also included extensive renovation of existing Pattee Library facilities.

Pattee Library is named for an early faculty member, Fred Lewis Pattee, while Paterno Library is named for Penn State's legendary football coach and strong supporter of the Libraries, Joe Paterno, and his wife, Sue. The cojoined Pattee Library and Paterno Library building contains:

  • seating for approximately 2,000 users
  • nearly 490,000 square feet, including 139,000 square feet of new space and 250,000 square feet of renovated space
  • eight subject libraries
  • estimated volume capacity of 2 million
  • more than 50 miles of cable for electronic and phone lines
  • nearly 2,000 data ports for computer hook-ups
  • approximately 500 powerful computer workstations
  • wired seminar and instruction rooms
  • comfortably appointed reading rooms
  • an auditorium equipped with data ports in every chair.
