Databases by Title (A-Z list)
The Databases by Title (A-Z list) is an alphabetical list of databases available to library patrons through the libraries' website. The Databases by Title(A-Z List) appears as a link on the Libraries' home page.
There are a number of different types of databases available through the Databases by Title list, including:
- Bibliographic databases, periodical indexes and abstracting services, used to locate citations for magazine and journal articles (CINAHL and PsycINFO, and many others.).
- Numeric/statistical databases, such as Tablebase and LexisNexis Statistical, provide direct access to statistical data and many full-text publications. [Note: In addition, the Social Sciences Library is the repository for a vast amount of statistical data in cd-rom and print format.]
- Full Text Databases:
- Newspaper and periodical articles that may or may not be available in the library in hardcopy or microformat. (LexisNexis Academic Universe, Science Direct, JSTOR, Muse, Newspapers-National Coverage, Proquest Direct and many others). In addition, the Databases by Title list provides access to the Libraries' subscriptions to thousands of "e-journals" that only appear in electronic form via the E-journal list link on the Libraries' homepage.
- Biographical and genealogical resources (African American Biographical Database, Biography and Genealogy Master Index, Contemporary Authors, and the Dictionary of Literary Biography and others)
- Literary works and literary criticism (Literature Online, the Database of 20th Century African-American Poetry, the American Poetry Database, Women Writers Online, and others)
- Electronic books and reference resources (United Nations Treaty Collection, the Patrologia Latina, the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and the Gale Virtual Reference Library)
- Newspaper and periodical articles that may or may not be available in the library in hardcopy or microformat. (LexisNexis Academic Universe, Science Direct, JSTOR, Muse, Newspapers-National Coverage, Proquest Direct and many others). In addition, the Databases by Title list provides access to the Libraries' subscriptions to thousands of "e-journals" that only appear in electronic form via the E-journal list link on the Libraries' homepage.
- Several major union lists, including Worldcat, and EZ Borrow PALCI, are included on the Databases by Title list. These databases enable staff and patrons to find materials located at other institutions.
- Image Databases (AccuNet/AP Photo Archive, Art, Architecture, and Landscape Pictures [digital images from Penn State collections]. ARTstor, CAMIO (Catalog of Art Museum Images Online) and others)
- Audio Databases (Smithsonian Global Sound, Classical Music Library, Naxos Music Library and others)
Patrons using the Libraries' website on-site have access to all databases. For outside users, many of the databases have authentication requirements and only appear on remote (outside of the Libraries' facilities) Database by Title List (A-Z) screens when the user has signed on with a Penn State access account user ID and password.
