Call NumbersThis is a featured page

The Libraries use two principal types of call numbers in their collections:

  • Library of Congress call numbers: Materials added to the collection after 1968 have an LC call number. Overview of the LC classification system; how to read LC call numbers.
  • Dewey Decimal call numbers. Books having Dewey decimal numbers are usually quite old, and most of them are annexed. Exceptions are the 800's (literature) and 920's (historical biographies). For an explanation of how to read Dewey numbers, click here. UPDATE (June 09); These books have been removed from the shelves in Pattee 2. Some will be re-cataloged with LC numbers and returned to the stacks. Others have been moved to the Annex.

There are special call number systems for government documents, maps, microforms, and some other miscellaneous format materials. Staff can provide assistance in locating specialized call numbers.
